Mix-breed dogs: Designed to help educate all who visit about how wonderful life can be when shared with a dog. http://mutts.orb3.net/
Don't
buy from a pet store that uses puppy mills
- 9 out of 10 puppies in a
pet store were purchased from
a puppy mill.
Source: ASPCA
- Each puppy purchased from
a pet store serves an industry
with no conscience and virtually
no enforcement by the USDA.
Source: In Defense of Animals
- Conditions at puppy mills
are cruel:
- Broken bones/infections/diseases
go untreated
- Voice boxes are crudely
severed
- Females are bred so often
they are disposed of in
5 years.
- Of the 5,000 puppy mills
in the United States, most
are in the Midwest.
Be part of the solution
- Spay or neuter and encourage
others to do the same.
- Adopt from a shelter or rescue
organization.
- Volunteer/Donate to humane
societies or rescues.
- Adopt only if you are ready
for a 10-18 year commitment.
Thinking about breeding?
Consider this ...
- You must pay state taxes
on pups you sell.
- The dog/pups will require
at least 8 veterinary visits
during and after pregnancy
... if you have a routine
pregnancy.
- Genetic testing/x-rays should
be done to both parents
- Breeding stresses the female
dog.
- Selling 12 puppies will be
difficult. Why will people
buy one of your pups?
- Advertising costs are high.
- You are responsible for dogs
you bring in this world and
should accept dogs that are
returned throughout their
life.
- Be prepared to pay for the
cost of an emergency cesarean
section and be prepared for
puppies born dead.
- Reputable breeders spay/neuter
the pups before adoption.
- Puppy mills and back yard
breeders exist in the Columbus
area. What if one of your
pups ends up there?
- You will not make money breeding
your dog ... not if you do
it properly. If you have this
kind of time, why not volunteer
to foster puppies with a rescue
or shelter? The dogs need
you.
The dog control agency of
Franklin County, Ohio, euthanizes
an average of 19 dogs and
puppies every day of the year. You
say you love dogs, so don't
add to this number.
Be part of the solution, not
part of the problem: Spay or
neuter your dogs and cats.
